Sally Chisholm holds the Germain Prévost Professorship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is Professor and Artist-in-Residence. She has been violist of the Pro Arte Quartet since 1991, and with them has toured the United States (including a performance at the White House), Korea and Japan and, most recently, a “homecoming” tour to Belgium as the capstone of PAQ’s 100th anniversary. She is a founding member of the Thouvenel String Quartet with whom she toured Europe, China and Lhasa, Tibet. Known for championing the works of great American composers, the Thouvenel Quartet commissioned works from Elliott Carter, Milton Babbitt, and Ernst Krenek, among others. Recipients of the first prize at the Weiner International Chamber Music Competition, they were also finalists of New York’s Naumburg Competition, and performed on NBC’s TODAY Show. Chisholm is a permanent member of the Northern Lights Chamber Music Institute, and the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota where she has collaborated with guest artists including Anthony McGill, Nobuko Imai, Samuel Rhodes, and Leon Fleisher. Ms. Chisholm frequently serves as Principal Violist of the Chicago Philharmonic and appears at numerous festivals in Europe and Japan. She returns to the Marlboro Music Festival each summer.
As a champion of new music, Chisholm recently presented the New York premiere of John Harbison’s Nine Rasas, and the world premiere of his Viola Sonata in Madison, Wisconsin. Other recent performances of note include the world premiere of the revised Viola Concerto of Paul Schoenfield, and a performance of the Bartok Viola Concerto in Budapest. Additional international appearances include concerts in North Korea, Tibet, and Poland including concerts at the famed Warsaw Conservatory. She has served as a juror for the Wronski International Violin Competition, and has been an artist/teacher at the Viola Festival in Otaru, Japan with violist Nobuko Imai. Chisholm loves fast electric cars and is a fan of the NBA.
