2013 FESTIVAL PROGRAMS

AUGUST 21 - SEPTEMBER 1

Improvisations on a Theme

- PROGRAM I -

JAZZ: HARRY WARREN & VOCAL JAZZ

Wednesday, August 21, 8:30 P.M.
Thursday, August 22, 5:00 P.M. -- Cafe Seating Sold Out (Balcony Seating Still Available)
Thursday, August 22, 8:30 P.M.

NEW! We're keeping a waiting list for an additional jazz performance Wednesday, August 21, 5:00 P.M. To add your name, please send us an e-mail or leave us a voice message.

We open the 2013 season with jazz! This summer we survey composer Harry Warren, including both well-known hits ("I Only Have Eyes for You," "At Last," "Lulu's Back In Town"), while also – as always – offering some choice little-known treasures like "I Want to be a Dancing Man," "You’re Gettin' to be a Habit," and "This Heart of Mine." Five members of Boston-based VocalJazz join the Token Creek House Band in this evocative program.

VocalJazz, vocals | Tom Artin, trombone | Rose Mary Harbison, violin
John Harbison, piano | John Schaffer, bass | Todd Steward, drums

- PROGRAM II -

OPEN END: NEW WORKS & IMPROVS

Saturday, August 24, 8:00 P.M.
Sunday, August 25, 4:00 P.M.

Guest composer-violinist Andrew Waggoner brings to the festival music of his own, as well as music by important composers of his generation, including Anna Weesner, performed by his ensemble, Open End. John Harbison’s Violin Sonata No. 2 will receive its world premiere. As always, music of Bach keeps our compass sharp.

Andrew Waggoner and Rose Mary Harbison, violin | Carrie Stinson, cello
Molly Morkowski and John Harbison, piano

- PROGRAM III -

SHAKESPEARE: THE BARD IN SONGS AND SCENES

Tuesday, August 27, 8:00 P.M.
Wednesday, August 28, 8:00 P.M.

In last summer’s Listen to the Land program we dramatized our debt to our rural environment as we explored intersections between art and nature; including an unexpected encounter with Shakespeare's Titania on the banks of Token Creek. This summer we again invite the Bard in a program that includes the premiere of Invention on a Theme of Shakespeare (solo cello and small ensemble), scenes from the plays accompanied by new incidental music, and songs and arias on texts by Shakespeare set by composers from Haydn and Schubert to the present.

Andrew Waggoner, violin | Carrie Stinson, cello | Molly Morkowski, piano
Allison Schaffer, actor | Mary Mackenzie, soprano

- PROGRAM IV -

FINALE: THE OLD AND UNFAMILIAR

Saturday, August 31, 8:00 P.M.
Sunday, September 1, 4:00 P.M.

A program with two of our favorite recent visitors together with Madison colleagues brings rare old things: Purcell’s Sonata on a Ground for Two Violins, Mozart’s unfinished Sonata in C (K. 403) completed by John Harbison, Mozart sonata movements completed by scholar/pianist Robert Levin (in preview performances, with the editor's permission), Mozart's infrequently heard and bizarrely scored Horn Quintet (for two violas, one violin, and cello), and some other rarities conclude our festival season.

Rose Mary Harbison & Heidi Braun Hill, violin | John Harbison, viola & piano
Karl Lavine, cello | Whitacre Hill, horn

All programs subject to change.
