2013 Festival |
2013 Festival Season August 20 - September 1 Dear Friends, If you participated in some of our events last year you might have found yourself in a large hayfield assessing its ecological possibilities and hazards, or crossing a beautiful new rustic bridge over Token Creek suddenly to be surprised by Titania declaiming her brilliant and blistering lines about our responsibility for our earth, and after that hearing a folk combo of accordion, guitar, and bass (!) playing Hoagy Carmichael. Or perhaps later that week you heart Bach's "latest," a new aria discovered only a decade ago. And could that new, completely stylish and winning jazz singer really have been only twenty-one years old, with a recent degree in mathematics? Since we like multi-year themes, we envision an evening of Shakespeare: dramatic readings with music, and works of music inspired by his words. Guest actors will be joined by our esteemed colleagues from Open End Ensemble, who bring their special improvisational skills. Drama is this evening's discovery — the Bard will rule the night! And there will be more discoveries: completions of marvelous unfinished movements of Mozart by the Mozart maestros, Robert Levin and John Harbison, and a new piece written by John for Rose Mary. The rest of our season we leave to our imaginations, with the thought that the Token Creek Festival is likely to continue in an experimental, free-thinking way. We hope that you will join us again for all the musical worlds we explore — pieces, concepts, players — and our ongoing commitment to surprise. And we hope that you might help us, again or for the first time. With warmest wishes for the new year,
John and Rose Mary Harbison |
